A NEW witness in the investigation into the mysterious death of former Hawick woman Betty Brown has come forward following an appeal on Crimewatch last Tuesday night.

Police have revealed that “within minutes” of the BBC1 show airing they received information which may shed light on how the 56-year-old – who lived in Edinburgh and was last seen travelling on the number three bus – was found dead in woods at Longtown, eight months after vanishing. They took a call from a witness who believes they saw Ms Brown talking to a mystery man on the X95 bus to Carlisle, minutes before she disappeared.

A spokesman said: “We received 13 calls, including one from a witness travelling on the X95 bus, who thinks they saw Betty talking to a man between Edinburgh and Carlisle.”
