One person was treated for smoke inhalation after a fire broke out at a property in the town centre on Thursday night.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service sent two Hawick crews to 24 High Street at about 9.55pm.

A spokesman said they faced a “well-developed fire” and firefighters from Selkirk, Jedburgh and Tollcross were also called to battle the blaze.

During the incident, the roof of the building collapsed.

The spokesman added: “When the fire had been extinguished, crews used small tools and lighting to check the roof space of the property for any further fire spread.”

The building was made safe at approximately 4.30am.
