A local hairdressing student has been chosen to represent Scotland in the national finals of a prestigious Wella compeitition to be held in London.
Marissa Sonkur, of Borders College, has proven she is a cut above the rest after her commercial cut and colour saw off stiff competition from not only her college peers, but also her contemporaries across the country, to secure a place in the final of next month’s annual Wella Xposure student competition at the Wella World Studio.
The 20-year old, who works in the Kudos salon in O’Connell Street on Fridays, told the Hawick News: “I’m very excited and can’t wait to compete in the final. I didn’t think I’d make it this far.
“This is a great opportunity for me to showcase my skills.”
Marissa, who lives in Fenwick Park, was among the top five entries from Borders College to be sent on to a national photographic heat, with the best 20 students then recreating their look live at the regional final. Four students from Borders College went through and Marisa was selected to battle it out against the top 20 in London.
Paula Hutchison, hairdressing programme leader, commented: “All the work on show was to a very high standard. This is a fantastic opportunity for Marisa and will be a great learning experience for her. All staff and students in the hairdressing department wish her the best of luck.”
Ambitious Marissa, who is studying level three hairdressing, added: “I’d like to think I can make second or third in the competition, however, the whole experience will be great.
“And in the future I’m hoping to build up my clientele and maybe open my own salon one day.”
