Lamont ‘concern’ at sex offender figures

A local politician has warned any suggestion that the town is being used as a dumping ground for known sex offenders would be of “serious concern”.

Recently-published figures show that 20 offenders are housed in and around in Hawick, and the TD postcode contains one of the highest concentrations of offenders of any postcode, alongside Dundee, Perthshire and Ayrshire.

Conservative MSP John Lamont, who is based in the town, told the Hawick News this week: “If there is any suggestion that Hawick and other Border communities are being used as an easy dumping zone for sex offenders, that is a very serious concern.

“At the same time, we need to bear in mind that there is a varying degree of types of sex offenders, so some pose more danger than others.”

The statistics were published with the aim of allowing parents to gauge the risk to their children of sex offenders who are resident nearby, and Mr Lamont urged any concerned constituents to contact the police.

“If they are worried about anybody, it is important that they contact the police in the first instance,” said Mr Lamont.

“It’s up to the police to take further action, not up to people to act.”
