Hawick MP Callum Kerr says Hawick’s new £10million distillery will put the town on the map.
Commenting on the news that work on the distillery in Commercial Road is set to begin in the New Year, Mr Kerr said he intends to meet the group behind the project next month to ensure they get all the support they need.
The SNP member continued: “It will be fantastic to see this project in Hawick become a reality. A distillery, of course, creates some direct jobs – 20 in this case – but it does so much more. It really puts a place on the map and makes your name visible right across the world – and that in turn brings in tourists.
“The Borders is the only region of Scotland without a distillery and this project will redress that. It offers us some huge opportunities.”
Mr Kerr added: “I recently visited Campbeltown with a group of friends to visit the Springbank distillery. We had a terrific time and while there we saw two groups of holidaymakers from Scandinavia and one from the US.
“They’d all made the trip because of the whisky. That’s a good example of what this sort of venture can do to boost the local economy.”
