HAWICK has not made it through to the next round of the 'Beautiful Scotland in Bloom' competition.
Organisers were stunned to learn that judges, a husband and wife team from Melrose, decided this year's effort was not up to scratch — but rivals Galashiels were.
Hawick in Bloom Vice-Chairman Jenny Wilson told the 'News' that the committee and council gardeners are devastated. "Everyone is terribly disappointed, we never imagined we would not get through because the town did look very nice and there was such a lot of hard work put into it", she said.
Judging took place over a fortnight ago when judges were taken on a route that included the gardens at the Leisure Centre, the Sonny Murray memorial, private gardens and the Walled Garden.
Along with the Hawick in Bloom committee, the parks department dedicated many hours to ensure the town's flower beds and baskets were ready. Mrs Wilson added: " We will be asking for a report to see where we went wrong."
Hawick was runner-up to Galashiels last year but has won the the competition 16 times.
