Hawick will lose two councillors at the next local elections in 2017.
Following a debate at Scottish Borders Council’s St Boswells headquarters on Thursday (yesterday) morning, Hawick and Denholm councillor Watson McAteer told the Hawick News that the only thing left to be finalised was the shape of the new wards.
He said: “‘It is clear from the engagement that SBC has had with the Boundary Commission that reducing Hawick’s quota of councillors from six to four in May 2017 is a done deal. What is currently being debated is the second phase of the commissions plans, where the shape of the new wards is being aligned to voter parity, resulting in the prospect of Newcastleton, Denholm, Bonchester and Chesters all being transferred to a Jedburgh superward.
“The proposals are now open to public consultation it must be hoped that the voices of those who are already making their feelings known are listened to.”
