Hawick’s monumental night

HUNDREDS of Teries thronged Central Square last night (Thurday) as the newly-restored Horse memorial was unveiled by Cornet Chris Ritson.

The project, which was commissioned by the Ancient Order of Mosstroopers, was undertaken in a bid to return the town’s iconic monument back as closely as possible to its original condition, and townsfolk were delighted with the results.

“The detail on the memorial is just fantastic,” said one onlooker, while another added: “I’ve already managed to get pretty close to it and the detail is quite something.”

The statue was first commissioned and paid for by subscription by the folk of Hawick in 1914, and was sculpted by Teri William Beattie.
