Earlier this month, five members of Hawick Lodge 111 visited the grave of Major William F. Beattie MC, sculptor of ‘The Horse’, at Tincourt New British Cemetery in Somme, France.
The group, in full Masonic regalia, laid a wreath on behalf of Lodge 111, of which Beattie was a member, sprinkled water from the Teviot, pebbles and earth from the Slitrig, and cast leaves from the Acacia tree in Wilton Lodge Park on his grave. “A wee bit of Hawick taken to him far away from home,” said a Lodge spokesperson.
After a short oration about Maj. Beattie, the moving service of remembrance concluded with the singing of Bonnie Teviotdale.
Those taking part in the ceremony were, from left: lan Stewart, Stewart Donaldson, Peter Rodger, Charles Roberts and John Pietranek.
