As night falls on Hawick the town is holding its breath with rain predicted to fall until 6am tomorrow, writes Colin Purvis.

The river has burst its banks in several locations, the town’s bridges are closed and hundreds are being evacuated from their homes.

Residents of Mansfield were evacuated this morning and Earl, Duke and Trinity Street residents as well as those living in the Sandbed, Haugh and Buccleuch Street areas were evacuated to Teviotdale Leisure Centre this afternoon.

Flood Group chairnan, councillor and provost Stuart Marshall, speaking from the bunker at Mansfield said: “This is a grave situation. We are now preparing for flooding in excess of 2005 levels.”
