Future of shop hangs in balance

LONG-standing knitwear shop White’s of Hawick is facing closure due to a downturn in sales.

Bosses have confirmed that the future of the Victoria Road shop looks bleak, and is currently the subject of a review.

David Riddell, head of production at Lochcarron, told the Hawick News: “Due to a fall in income from the shop itself across retail, mail order and day sales, it is under review.”

Seven staff are currently employed at the shop, which opened in 1981 but was established in 1968.

Mr Riddell stressed that no decision had yet been reached, but added: “The shop’s usual clientele which targets an older market seems to be in decline. And it has been affected by what’s happening at Locharron, and we have had a difficult year. But at the moment it is still business as usual.”
