THE derelict site of the former Wilton South and St Margaret’s Church could be bought by Scottish Borders Council.
The building was demolished by the local authority over ten years ago and attempts to recover that money – over £200,000 – proved fruitless, with the owner believed to be living in America.
And although the amount was written off by SBC last month, it was revealed this week that tentative steps have been taken about obtaining a compulsory purchase order.
Chief financial officer David Robertson said: “We are looking to see if we are legally competent to acquire that site given the money we’ve spent on it. I’ve asked legal services if there could be a compulsory purchase order and, because we’ve spent so much already, we believe it could be done at very little cost.”
