Food store planning bid goes to council

German supermarket giant Aldi looks set to open a store at the former Wilton Mills site in Commercial Road.

The planning bid, which, if given the go-ahead, could create up to 30 new jobs, was submitted to Scottish Border Council at the end of last week by architects Aitken and Turnbull.

A spokesperson for the company said they did not have the contract for the site but added that the retailer was “reviewing its options for Hawick”.

The store will be built to the rear of the now demolished factory and the clock tower will be retained. The former YM clubrooms, neighbouring garages and outbuildings are to be demolished to make way for a car park and a separate service entry.

The plans also include a 1.2metre high boundary wall which will be built using stone reclaimed following the demolition of the old spinning mill.
