Flag taken down on safety grounds

The Union Jack flag which usually flies above the town hall has been taken down after the flagpole
was damaged at the weekend.

Several townsfolk contacted the Hawick News earlier this week to point out that the flag was not flying as usual.

Property maintainance officer Frank Scott noticed the top of the flag pole lying on a roof from his office window earlier this week and had the flag taken down for safety reasons.

Mr Scott has contacted the company which originally supplied the flag pole and is seeking an estimate for repairs.

Speaking this week, he said: “I was a bit concerned in case anyone was wondering why the flag wasn’t flying at this time of the year. I noticed the damage at the beginning of the week and will now wait to hear from the company who supplied the pole.”

Mr Scott said the current pole had been in place for several years and that he hoped it would be repaired soon.

He said: “I have no idea how much it will cost but it will have to be fixed. Hopefully the manufacturer will get back to me fairly quickly and we can have the flag flying above the building again.”
