Finale comes too soon for the Big Eight

ACTING Father Iain Huggan claimed at the very outset that his role was a “young man’s job” and worried about lasting the pace throughout the various ride-outs, dinners, smokers and functions.

But he admitted as he approached Crumhaughhill Road on Saturday afternoon alongside his Cornet Ross Nichol he wanted to do it all over again.

He said: “We went on in front on Saturday and I turned to Ross and said I wish we were starting this again.”

For Cornet Nichol it was a time to reflect on a tremendous effort and to clutch a tight grip around the Banner Blue for one last time.

Eighty-two hardy souls had dried themselves off to follow their Cornet and following a morning of calm, ironically the sun appeared as the Flag was being handed back at the town hall ceremony.

With hundreds watching, Cornet Nichol and the rest of the Big Four said a final goodbye to the Banner Blue from the balcony.
