Factory owners to be sent letter

The owners of the former Woodcock’s factory in Mansfield Square are to be made aware of their “legal requirements” following concerns over gas canisters in the disused building.

Councillor Stuart Marshall told us recently that he feared they were a “potential bomb” and urged Scottish Borders Council to remove them.

SBC said it didn’t have the powers to do so, but issued the following statement on Monday: “A multi-agency meeting was held last week and as a result it has been agreed that a multi-agency response letter will be sent to the owners of the property to make them aware of their statutory and legal requirements to maintain the building in a safe and secure manner.

“The partners would like to take the opportunity to once again remind people not to enter derelict buildings.”
