Easton battling for Championship at Brands

Teri motorcycle ace Stuart Easton could clinch the British Supersport Championship at Brands Hatch this weekend.

The Mar-Train racer leads by 19 points ahead of the final two races on Saturday and Sunday, with 50 points up for grabs.

After a dramatic penultimate round at Silverstone two weeks ago, Easton crashed out of the opening race on lap one on the Saturday.

But the Hawick lad battled bravely to fourth place in race two on the Sunday from the fourth row of the grid, setting up a grandstand finish.

Originally leading by just six points, an incident involving rivals Alastair Seeley and Jason O’Halloran resulted in Seeley being given a 10 second penalty by race stewards, leaving him in tenth place for race two on Sunday.

The re-shuffle moved Easton up to third place, and increased his and Mar-Train Racing’s championship lead to 19 points.

Reflecting after the Silverstone races, Easton said: “We go to Brands with all to play for.”

Team principal Tim Martin added: “This championship is never over until it’s over.”

Last week, PBM team boss Paul Bird confirmed Easton will be returning to the team after a year at Mar-Train, competing in the 2014 MCE British Superbike series, alongside Shane Byrne. Easton will also return to Superbikes at the North West 200 next

The Sunflower Trophy Races, held at Bishopscourt Race Circuit on Friday 25 and Saturday 26 October, will be Easton’s last set of races for the Northern Ireland based Mar-Train team.

It may be an uphill task for the Teri, because he’s never raced at the Strangford Lough venue, and nor has he raced Tim and Sonya Martin’s R1 Superbike before.

“I had a look at the circuit on Thursday [last week] and it looks like a good fun place to ride,” he said.

Easton will also get to renew his rivalry at Bishopscourt with Carrick’s Alastair Seeley in the Schimmel Distribution Supersport encounter.

One of the pair will arrive at Bishopscourt as 2013 British Supersport champion, with Seeley’s Gearlink Kawasaki team-mate Ben Wilson also coming along to try and spoil the party.

The main piece of silverware all the big guns want to take home at the end of the meeting is the coveted Sunflower Trophy.
