Threatening a former partner on Christmas Eve resulted in James Bell being sentenced to a three-month Community Payback Order with 60 hours of unpaid work.

Bell, 23, of Charles Street, admitted behaving in a threatening or abusive manner towards the woman at a house in Lanton Place on December 24.

Procurator fiscal Graham Fraser told Jedburgh Sheriff Court the couple had been in a relationship for 18 months, but broke up about a week before.

He went to the house “to talk” in the early hours of the morning.

“He wanted her to cuddle him, and when she declined, he began to shout and threaten to damage the property,” explained Mr Fraser.

The woman dialled 999, and police could hear “a distressed female” from outside, and the accused shouting and swearing.

Defence solicitor Alison Marshall said the relationship was now over.

“He says that she telephoned him and asked him to go over, which he did, and there was an argument between them, and he refused to leave,” said Miss Marshall.
