A thief stole from a local supermarket, saying he was “hungry”.

Barry Hayward, 32, of Howdenbank, admitted stealing food, light bulbs, and a razor from Sainsbury in Commercial Road, on March 8.

The stolen items, worth £26.89, were fully recovered.

Defence solicitor Iain Burke told Jedburgh Sheriff Court that Hayward “was hungry and had no food in the house.

“He took these things in a moment of madness,” he added.

Sentence was deferred until November 14.
