Johnny and Christina Handley recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary, surrounded by their two daughters, four granddaughters, four great-granddaughters and five great-grandsons.
The large family gathering enjoyed a meal at the Mayfield Bar and Restaurant earlier this month.
Eighty-four-year-old Johnny met Christina, 85, when he came down from Dumfries to the Common-Riding in 1947.
Johnny said: “I spotted Christina pushing her little brother in a pram and she was the first woman I ever spoke to in Hawick. A week later we tried to hitchhike to Edinburgh to elope but only got as far as Selkirk.”
The couple married in St Cuthbert’s Church on Wednesday, January 3, 1951, and set up home in Hawick where Christina worked in several local knitwear mills and Johnny as a bricklayer and partner in the firm of Ballantyne and Handley.
Johnny added: “The secret to a long and happy marriage is forgiveness and socialising.”
