Committee hoping sun shines on Vertish Sports

The 130th Annual Vertish Hill Sports takes place tomorrow and the committee are hoping for fair weather and a great turnout, writes Rachel Scott.

This year sees 1,049 children from the town’s primary schools registered to compete on the course, a rise of over 100 from last year’s sports.

As usual, children under-fives who wish to take part in the races can register on the day.

Honorary secretary of the Vertish Hill Sports Committee, Frank Scott (pictured), said: “We’re hoping for a good day with lots of good weather and lots of kids coming up the hill.”

Children should meet at the Evergreen Hall at 12:30pm and the procession will start from the Horse at 1pm, led by the Hawick Scouts Band. The band will lead the procession along the High Street and up to the Vertish Hill where the races will take place. Children who take part in the procession will receive a present of £3.

In case of adverse weather conditions on the day, an announcement will be made on Radio Borders after 11am on the status of the sports.
