Claim that knife found was for ‘protection’

A woman who had a knife in her trouser waistband told police her boyfriend was “a psycho” and it was for her own protection.

Jennifer McFarlane, 45, of Bourtree Place, admitted having a knife in Bourtree Place on September 29.

Procurator fiscal Morag McLintock told how McFarlane had been drinking in a local pub when a brown handle was seen protruding from her jeans.

Police attended and a knife, with a four-inch blade, was found in her trouser waistband.

McFarlane told officers she had fallen out with her boyfriend, adding, “he’s a psycho and it’s for my own protection”.

McFarlane’s solicitor told Jedburgh Sheriff Court her client had been a licence holder at the time, but the premises had since ceased trading, and she was under “an increasing amount of stress”.

“Through that stress, she had drunk the best part of a bottle of wine, and was also taking painkillers, so her recollection is minimal,” said the lawyer.

“This was very much out of character,” concluded the solicitor.
