‘Bell’ set to chime at Hawick Archaeological Society

The first lecture of the new season takes place on Tuesday, September 1, at 7.30 pm in the town hall when Ron Addison will give an illustrated lecture entitled ‘The Tale of a Bell’.

Travellers on the A7 between Hawick and Langholm will have passed Ewes Kirk and wondered about the bell, which hangs from the tree in the churchyard. What at first seemed a straightforward task of local research into the origins and history of the bell in the tree became a lengthy investigation full of surprises. Unravelling the story involved many journeys through the Borders and beyond.

The tale starts with its founding in 1652 and weaves its way back and forth through the dark ages of Reformation Scotland.
