Atkinson Road approval

COUNCILLORS have approved a contribution of £4,000 being given towards a £21,000 scheme to provide a layby in Atkinson Road.

The funding from the Teviot and Liddesdale Area Committee’s budget allows Scottish Borders Council to create extra parking in order to ease traffic congestion and road safety fears – and prevents a one-way system being put in place.

Members also gave the thumbs up to £650 being awarded for Newcastleton’s Britain in Bloom finalists to purchase 16 new planters for the village; £7,150 for an additional 13 bollards on Hawick High Street; and £3,250 to replace a grass verge in Wilton Cemetery with tarmac infill.

SBC Local’s Craig Blackie then urged the committee to highlight areas where their remaining budget could be spent, stating: “The total of these four schemes comes to approximately £15,000, which leaves £5,000 for the end of the financial year.”
