Shopkeepers are being urged to support the community council’s Christmas shop window competition in a bid to offset a possible downturn in trade due to the opening of the Borders Railway.

Marion Short, the community council chair, said: “We’re hoping traders will participate this year in an attempt to entice townsfolk to shop locally. We’ve heard there might be a drop in trade locally as a side effect of the opening of the Borders Railway and people shopping in Edinburgh, so this is an opporunity to try and reverse this trend.”

The competition f ormat has changed this year with the large and small window categories rolled into one.
