Aldi bid confirmed as developer issues plea to townsfolk

A proposal to bring supermarket giant Aldi to Hawick has finally been confirmed.

After months of rumours that a local developer was planning to create a new supermarket in Commercial Road, the Hawick News can report that all is due to be revealed at a public exhibition on December 18.

The owners of the Wilton Mills site have this week announced that they will be bringing forward a fresh planning application with Aldi as the proposed operator for the site. And the public is urged to visit an exibition at the Heart of Hawick.

Gavin Stevenson, of Wilton Mills Ltd, said: “We will be explaining the details of our plans at a joint exhibition with Aldi, and given the weeks and months of speculation over the future of the site, we are delighted to reveal we are in partnership with Aldi.”

He added: “We hope that as many local shoppers as possible will come along between 11am and 5pm to find out more. Feedback from the exhibition will be included in a consultation report to accompany the planning application which we intend to lodge later this month.”

Graham Nicolson, property director for Aldi Stores, commented: “We are very excited about the prospect of coming to Hawick. The Aldi brand is very popular with Borders customers, and we look forward to meeting as many local people as possible on December 18 to explain what we have in store for Hawick.”
