Nearly 8,000 people have applied for 100 train driver jobs advertised by ScotRail in just a week.

The rail operator is recruiting drivers at depots across Scotland, from Aberdeen to Tweedbank.

Trainees are to be paid £24,559 in their first year, increasing to £43,212, following a probationary period.

A ScotRail spokeswoman said: “We’re very happy with the response - it’s great to see so many people who want to join the organisation.”

The company says it is looking for “enthusiastic, reliable candidates with excellent attention spans, experience of safety-critical roles and a passion for customer service”.
