1972: COMPLAINTS of high food prices in the town were discussed by the council’s general services committee at their monthly meetin. Councillor C. Graham said only that night he had been visited by a deputation of women who had expressed the hope that the knitwear wage increase would not mean a further rise in the price of groceries.

1982: THE £2.5million first phase of Hawick’s new leisure centre, comprising swimming pool, squash courts, sauna, cafeteria and bar facilities, was officially opened on Friday by Prince Michael of Kent, accompanied by his wife.

The royal couple arrived by official car at the centre at 4pm to be met by the Duke of Buccleuch.

Provost J. Irvine, after a brief word of welcome, asked the Prince to unveil a commemorative plaque mounted on a wall in the lounge.

The Prince and Princess were then escorted on a tour of the building and were able to see many of the facilities in action.

Much interest and enthusiasm was shown when the party arrived at the pool, with the architects and other officials answering many of the Prince’s questions about its unique shape and heating system.

Later, at a reception in the Cheviot Suite bar, the royal visitors enjoyed tea and talked informally with other guests.

Before departure, Provost Irvine presented the couple with two cashmere sweaters, donated by Barrie, on behalf of the District Council, as mementos of their visit to Hawick, and the Prince and Princess appeared highly delighted with the quality Hawick knitwear.

1992: FOLLOWING the recent fire which is estimated to have caused over £1million damage to the Marina Entertainment Centre in Towerdykeside, the building owners, JVR Leisure, Berwick, have appointed appointed the United Kingdom’s largest firm of insurance loss assessors, the Balcombee Group, to prepare a damages claim.

2002: A TEVIOTHEAD woman and her four children were rescued from their home on Tuesday morning after floodwaters left them stranded. Marion McNally and her children - James, 9, Nathan, 7, Adam, 4, and 18-month-old Amelia - were rescued by firefighters at around 9am after a neighbour raised the alarm.
