Fledling local charity Avril’s Trust, which was set up in memory of a young mum who suffered a fatal heart attack, has successfully donated its first defribillator to the town.

The trust, which was formed following the sudden death of mum-of-two Avril McLeod (nee Brown), aims to increase awareness about the risks and enable early diagnosis of Sudden Heart Failure - and their wish to buy three life-saving devices for Hawick is becoming a reality, with the Heart of Hawick becoming the first recipient. Avril’s sister Wendy said: “It means a great deal to be able to place our first defibrillator within the town, hopefully there will never be an instance to use it, but it puts the resources there if needed.”

Purchase of the £1,185 machine was possible following the success of a well-attended Easter event, and the charity is continuing its work with a second confirmed location.
