Veteran Burnfoot Community School head janitor Eck Barclay has finally hung up his keys after 30 years.

The long-standing staff member retired from service at the school just before the Christmas holidays, and was given a warm send-off by colleagues.

Fellow janitor Derek Gordon told the Hawick News: “Eck was very highly thought of here at the school and was an integral part of the staff. He was one of the longest serving members of staff, in with the bricks and mortar, but we wish him well.”

Mr Barclay, also well-known locally as a Halberdier at the Common-Riding and convenor of the Borders branch of Unite, the union, commented: “It was a strange feeling at the end of term, I’ve had lots of good times at the school and it was a great place to work.”

Staff at the school presented Mr Barclay with a voucher for a meal at a local restaurant, and also have plans for a future night out. But Mr Barclay added: “I am remaining an employee of Scottish Borders Council and continuing my union work, so I’ll still be busy.”
