businesswoman Kim Millar has spoken of her pride at attending the prestigious Young Scot Awards last week, despite not lifting a gong at the glittering bash.
The success of Kim’s High Street nail salon Perfectly Polished, which she started after being made redundant and following the birth of son Leo, was shortlisted as a finalist in the enterprise category.
Accompanied by dad Graeme Millar and step-mum Lesley Turnbull, Kim said they were greeted at Glasgow’s Hilton Hotel by girls on stilts and a choir, before enjoying the lavish ceremony which was attended by pop star Alesha Dixon and included a performance by X-Factor winner Olly Murs.
Kim, 22, told the Hawick News: “It was a great honour to have been shortlisted, and having my name and Perfectly Polished on the screen was amazing. They said a little about me and my granny leaving me money which inspired me to get up and do something I love.”
She has also been recognised by industry leader Nail Harmony with whom she has become a lecturer and works at UK beauty shows. Kim continued: “Juggling my son, training and, of course, Perfectly Polished being selected for the final three made it feel right, that I’ve done a great thing for myself. They said we were an inspiration, which was great to hear.”
Kim says having her own business has also brought a new appreciation for her home town. She added: “My books are full and clients see my passion, and thanks to them that’s why I’m busy. I can’t thank them and the Prince’s Scottish Youth Business Trust enough for their support.”
