Fund-raising poetry evening helps raise spirits and cash

FORMER high school teacher John Coutts and his wife Heather returned to the town recently and joined members and friends of the Hawick Salvation Army Corps in a fund-raising evening of poetry.

The couple presented compilations from his school days, their years at a Selvation Army school in Nigeria and his current work with schools in Stirling.

Captain Steven Turner said: “The audience were delighted with humorous verse, moved to reflection and encouraged to present some poems.”

The evening also helped to raise over £100 for John and Heather’s daughter Elspeth, who is to spend a year teaching in Uganda with Scottish charity Project Trust.

With the combination of a coffee morning, the poetry evening and donations, Elspeth went away with £380 towards her target of £4,950.
