Nikki Walker is one of four front-runners for the vacant Hawick RFC head coaching role.
The Hawick News understands that the former Scotland internationalist and three other unnamed candidates are being considered to replace Phil Leck, who joined RBS Premiership rivals Edinburgh Accies last week.
Greens president Rory Bannerman said: “We’ve received a number of CVs from far and near and we have been relatively pleased with the quality of candidates who have put themselves forward.
“Realistically, we have four genuine contenders for the position.
“All of the contenders have excellent rugby knowledge and rugby playing experience, and we are aiming to have the head coach ready by the end of June or sooner.”
On the speculation surrounding Walker, who is currently under contract at Edinburgh, the president said: “I was stopped in the supermarket recently by someone asking me when Nikki was going to be confirmed as the new head coach, which I did find very strange and amusing.
“But you have to expect these sorts of things as everyone wants who they want.”
Bannerman continued: “We know that whoever comes into the role, people will think the club have made a wrong decision, just like when we appointed Phil and just look how that turned out.
“Everyone has an opinion on who the coaches should be but we are optimistic that this process will give Hawick RFC the best possible outcome and continue to grow and take the club to the next level everyone expects.”
Walker is on holiday and could not be contacted.
