Smith is the one to beat at games

AN excellent entry for senior, youth and junior events has been received for the Hawick Border Games at the Volunteer Park on Sunday.

Main event on the card is the ten-heat 110m handicap, which has a first prize of £1,000.

Featured in the second heat is Scottish amateur internationalist Nick Smith, of Shaftsbury AC, who runs off scratch.

A class act, Smith lines up against Hawick’s David Hush (20.5m).

John Paxton (16.5m) represents Hawick in the opening heat, while in heat three Teri twosome James Parker (7m) and David Lauder (12m) clash.

The remainder of the event sees many other Hawick sprinters in action.

Veteran David Grieve (14.5m) goes in heat four, which includes New Year sprint winner Martyn Paterson of Clackmannan (5.5m).

Gary Wilson (14.5m) is in the following heat and Royal Albert footballer Douglas Prowse (9.5m) runs in the sixth.

Heat eight has Ross Weir (20m) going for glory. Also in this one is Jedburgh’s Seb Harrison (6.5m) – winner of the Hawick sprint a year ago.

Former Hawick-based sprinter Iskan Barskanmay (5.5m), who now competes under the banner of Jed AC, battles it out with former stable mate Drew Bryson (20m) in the eighth heat, which also features the unknown quantity Wei Jen Choa of Stirling (9m).

David Rae (8.5m) and Ryan Trimby (13m) lock horns in heat nine and, in the final heat, promising youngster Dylan Ali (10.5m) goes against Lee Notman (9m).

With two wins under his belt already this season, Derek Scott (90m) bids to make it three in a row in the 800m handicap.

Scott (250m) is also in the 3,200m handicap along with other Hawick hopefuls Michael Crawford (150m), Keith Murray (320m) and Gary Law (700m).

There are Hawick youngsters in abundance in the junior and youth events, which includes 90m, 200m and 400m races.

Those going in the junior 90m are: Calum Murray (10m), Daniel Elliot (5.5m), Calum Renwick (8m), Phillipa Robertson (8m), Ronin McKean (7m) and Barrie McLean.

Bethan Douglas (14.5m), Corey Wilson (9.5m), Ryan Elliot (4.5m), Matthew Bell (19.5m), Lewis Elliot (22m), Megan Shiel (14.5m), Kyle Brunton (18m), Jack Wilson (11m) and Darcy Graham (16m) are the Hawick young guns in the youths 90m handicap.

Ryan Elliot also represents Hawick in the 100m Border Atheltic Under-17 Championships.

The games commence at 1pm.
