A DEPLETED pack contributed to Hawick YM’s downfall at Poynder Park last Friday night.

And it could have been a whole lot worse after the first half dismissal of Alistair Turnbull – for two yellow card offences – resulted in uncontested scrums.

Coach Jammy McFarlane said: “We played some bits and pieces of good rugby but that was off the back of having uncontested scrums.

“We were without our No.8 and our front row. When you take away our scrum like that we’re in trouble and that’s what happened.”

Kelso opened the scoring with a Richard Minto try, but Gregor Welsh slotted a penalty to get the YM on the scoreboard.

Greg Ponton and Welsh traded penalties before Minto and Ian Wallace crossed for the home side, with Ponton converting the first.

Jason Hendrie scored a try and Welsh converted and added a penalty in the first half.

Into the second half and Adam Alexander scored for Kelso before Minto went over for his hat-trick. Ponton kicked a penalty and converted Minto’s try.

Welsh completed the scoring for the Redskins with another penalty.
