Greens coach Phil Leck admits that the Ayr clash will have a “bit of spice” to it after various on and off-the-field issues between the two clubs.
The Mansfield Park encounter brings the curtain down on a thrilling RBS Premiership season, but for both sides the contest appears to have little riding on it, with Hawick safely above the relegation play-off places, while Ayr can only improve their own point’s total.
However, recent off-field issues surrounding both clubs’ respective presidents over the postponement of the original fixture in February, and the added intrigue of USA sevens sensation Carlin Isles’ availability for the visitors, will no doubt lead to fireworks this weekend.
The SRU and Glasgow Warriors have yet to confirm rugby’s fastest man, pictured, will be at Ayr’s disposal this weekend but it is a prospect Leck is clearly relishing.
“We want to play the best and if he [Carlin Isles] plays along with the rest of their pros then it means we have a chance to test ourselves against some top-quality opposition.
“I’m confident the lads will be right up for the game given what has been said by them [Ayr] in the press, it adds a bit of spice to the game. We are very motivated to end the season on a high note and finish as far up the league as possible.”
After Saturday’s victory at home to Heriot’s, Leck was keen to praise his side’s resilience and perseverance over the duration of a difficult campaign, taking time to thank everyone who has been involved with the club.
“Our squad is small and undersized compared to other sides in this league but what the lads have achieved this season has been nothing short of outstanding. We have had our injuries to key players at different points throughout the campaign but we have managed to get through them.
“We haven’t always achieved the results we have wanted but everyone from our pros right through to the coaches have all worked extremely hard.
“Everyone who has been involved this season has been terrific and have helped to improve the club. This weekend offers us a perfect opportunity to sign off with a win and finish as high as possible.”
