HAWICK players Lindsay Gibson and Greg Cottrell have been rewarded for their fine form this season by being named in the Scottish club squad for matches against Ireland and France.
The Greens scrum-half and influential captain, Greg Cottrell, who has previously been capped by the Scotland club team back in 2008 when he was with Boroughmuir, is keen to add to his tally of appearances when the team takes on Ireland and France in February and March. Cottrell said: “It is fantastic to be named in the squad and a complete honour. I have had some injuries this year but I feel great now and hopefully I am given a chance against Ireland and France.
“I obviously won a cap when I was with Boroughmuir in 2008 and I am looking to add to that this year. We have a game next Wednesday against the under-20’s which is basically our last run out before the squad is completely set for Ireland so I hopefully will get a chance to show what I have.”
This will be Green’s hooker, Lindsay Gibson’s, first selection into the Scotland club squad but is under no illusions as to how much work he needs to put in from now until the match day team is announced.
Gibson said: “It is an incredible honour to be even considered for the squad. I know that it is going to be hard to get into the match-day team as the other two hookers selected are contracted players with Glasgow and Edinburgh but as long as I keep working hard, I stand as good a chance as any.
“Honestly I was very surprised about the selection, I didn’t expect it but I will work hard and hopefully get some game time.
“We have a warm-up match against the Scotland under-20’s soon and with matches against Kelso, Gala, Ayr and Stirling to come for hawick it provides me with a platform to show what I can do.”
Both Cottrell and Gibson will be aided in their quest for selection as Hawick coach, Phil Leck, is heading the coach staff for the two international matches.
Leck said: It is a huge honour to be able to coach this team and take on some real tough opposition. My aim is to go one better than last year.”
