Hawick ace Gareth Renwick made it two in a row as he won the Border Boys Matchplay Championship last weekend, only two weeks after winning the Border Boys Strokeplay Championship.
He defeated Connor Brunton in Sunday’s thrilling all-Hawick final at Selkirk Golf Club.
Two weeks ago, Gareth came out on top at Kelso and claimed the Strokeplay Championship ahead of fellow Hawick player Harry Forsyth.
Over 20 players competed to qualify for only eight places available in the Matchplay Championship.
Five Hawick boys qualified for the final eight last Saturday with three making it through to the semi finals on Sunday.
Gareth’s campaign got off to a flier as he cruised into Sunday’s semi with a huge win, defeating Roxburghe’s Angus Roberts 9&7, winning nine holes out of the first 11, setting up a showdown with Forsyth.
He was still in cruise control on Sunday as he brushed aside Harry with an easy win of 7&6 to reach the final.
Connor didn’t have such a plane sailing route to the final. His victory on Saturday came at the first extra and then on Sunday morning at the 17th.
The final was always going to be a thriller between these two and so it proved.
But Gareth didn’t get off to the start he had done in his previous two matches, finding himself two down after two as Connor took the early advantage. However, over the course of the match it was Gareth’s outstanding putting skills that separated the two players.
A superb up and down from the thick rough at the 15th was enough to take the title.
Hawick now hold all three of the Border Boys Golf Championships of 2011, with Dalton Redpath (Under-16s) and Gareth Renwick (Strokeplay and Matchplay Championships).
