National Division Two
THE Redskins made heavy weather of this match between the league’s top and bottom teams and there was no repeat of the previous week’s mauling.
Played in diffucult conditions, the opening exchanges were dominated by the hosts and they posted the first points with a penalty.
Annan continued to dominate territory and posession and it was the 39th minute before any sort of scoring chance came the YM’s way. Having swung the ball wide for a few phases it got to Lewis Mallin on the flank who hacked ahead and veteran Gregor Welsh dribbled soccer-style over the line. Ali Weir added the extras from in front of the posts.
The second half saw the Redskins pick up their game a bit and it was no surprise when another try was scored. A breakout from deep involving Craig Robson, Chris Ritson and Scott McLeod saw Neil McColm give the scoring pass to his winger Shaun Desport to go in at the corner. The missed conversion made the score 12-3 and it looked for 5 minutes that the visitors would overwhelm their lowly hosts.
But Annan showed tremendous character to take control of proceedings for the remainder of the game and another penalty goal was scant reward for their effort and enthusiasm.
