Young swimmers join forces for medal-laden end to year

FOLLOWING the successful merger in October of Teviotdale Turbo Swimming Club and Hawick Amateur Swimming Club, the newly-formed Hawick and Teviotdale Swimming Club enjoyed a very successful end to 2013.

The young Teries competed in the Border Relay Championships in Galashiels at the end of November, with the 10-and-under boys’ and girls’ teams taking custody of the trophy. The boys were Marcus Brogan,Ben Morozzo,Jack Oliver and Sean Whiteford, and the girls Sophie Allen,Alyssa Jack,Megan Landles and Connie Wilson.

In the 11-13 age group, Hawick and Teviotdale were runners-up, with the girls’ team comprising Lindsay Jack, Eilidh Jaffray,Mya Pearce and Abigail Potts, and the boys Liam Caldwell,Jamie Diver,Jamie Grant and Charlie Wilson. Well done to all swimmers.

On December 7, the youngsters were in action in the Tranent Christmas Gala at the Mercat Gait Centre, Prestonpans.

In the morning session, 10-and-unders Sophie Allen, Alyssa Jack, Marcus Brogan, Ben Morozzo and Sean Whiteford were flying the Hawick flag, with Sophie picking up a silver medal in the 50m butterfly. Alyssa notched some great personal bests as did Ben. Sean came away with a bronze in the 50m freestyle.

Marcus Brogan enjoyed a very successful day with five medals from five swims, landing gold for backstroke, silver for butterfly, bronze for both freestyle and individual medley, and a medal for breaststroke.

Marcus,Sean, Sophie and Alyssa also clinched silver in the 4x50 freestyle relay.

In the afternoon it was Eildih Jaffray’s turn to take to the pool in the 11-and-over section, and she secured three silver medals in the 50m butterfly, 50m breaststroke and individual medley, as well as fourth spot in the 100m freestyle. Well done again all the swimmers.

Meanwhile, this weekend sees Emma Suddon, Lindsay Jack and Eildih Jaffray taking part in the East District Age Group Championships at The Commonwealth Pool in Edinburgh. Good luck to the girls from everyone at the club.
