Championship finals day at Minto Golf Club provided spectators with some entertaining golf and intriguing matches, and saw one family firmly in the swing for success.
Peter Gibb won the gents’ first division Championship for the third time after a 34-hole match with Brian Howden, while Carole Allott’s path to the ladies’ silver division title also proved a tough one, with her opponent, Cherry Thom, pushing her very hard and taking the match to the 18th where Carole eventually prevailed.
Rory Latta added to his run of impressive results in club competitions this year by taking the spoils in the junior class one championship, beating Daniel Murdoch 3&2.
All four members of the Towers family, Angus and Mary and their children Frazer and Lily, appeared in the finals – a remarkable achievement. Angus won the gents’ division two championship against Ali Elliot, while Mary lost out 4&3 to Anne Paterson in the ladies’ bronze division final.
Frazer and Lily contested the junior class two championship thus ensuring a second championship trophy in the Towers’ household at the end of finals day. This intriguing contest between brother and sister began with them halving the first hole but a majestic 25-yard birdie putt on the 2nd put Frazer one up. struck back immediately with a tee shot to seven feet to win the 4th. Thereafter, Frazer dominated with a 6&5 victory.
In the other finals, Jake Hope beat Tommy Mulvee 4&3 for a maiden win in the gents’ division three championship, while Finlay Campbell and Hector Patterson won the junior six-hole ‘A’ and ‘B’ championships respectively.
Congratulations to all who contributed to making this a memorable finals day.
