Local man Craig Girvan certainly hasn’t let the grass grow under his feet since winding up his 22-year supermarket career a few weeks ago.
He’s started his own company, G10 Sports, and is bringing the first ever Bubble Football venture to the Borders.
This fast-paced inflatable fun is available to members of the public, clubs, groups and is ideal entertainment for kids’ parties, office dos and corporate events and Craig has various packages to suit all budgets.
Craig, 45, plans to hold beginner sessions as well as female-only slots and is encouraging townsfolk to come along today (Friday) to see the first Bubble Football match ever played in the town.
Perhaps best known locally as the coach of the hugely successful Hawick Floorball team, Craig also plans to offer kids in primary school the chance to join in ‘Fit Friday’ sessions, not only aimed at getting the youngsters mobile and improving fitness but also to instill the benefits of regular and themed exercise.
Speaking to the Hawick News this week, Craig, who worked in Morrisons for 20 years, said: “I just really needed to do something different and Bubble Football is certainly different. Everyone who has tried it, and the folk I have spoken to who do it regularly, love it and I’m really hoping it catches on in the town and further afield.”
Bubble Football consists of players wearing an inflatable football shaped suit and teams of 10 – unless agreed prior to the day – and the rest is about scoring goals, with regular-sized footballs and having lots of fun.
Players must be at least seven years old, above 4ft (1.2m) and under 6ft 6in (1.98m), be of a reasonable fitness level with no medical concerns. And as it’s basically a contact sport, Craig is keen to point out that the normal risks apply.
He added: “I first heard of Bubble Football from one of the lads I coach at floorball and I had a look and thought this might just be a good thing. I have had lots of interest and at £5 for a half-hour session it’s not going to break the bank. I am also keen to develop the fitness side of things and will be looking at various options to further my own personal development.”
