After four years competing in the Scottish MINI Cooper Cup, Hawick racer Hamish Brandon has made the switch to the national series MINI Challenge.
Hamish has signed up for Excelr8 Motorsport, one of the series’ top teams.
He said: “We felt it was time to make the move to the national series. The Scottish series has been a great learning platform for us and we plan to take part in some of the Scottish rounds this season, but our main focus now is the MINI Challenge.
“It’s a great series. While the cars are similar to those we race in Scotland, we will get the chance to visit circuits all over the UK, there’s even a round in Holland.
“I’ve always wanted to race at Brands Hatch and Donington and this year I’ll get the chance.”
The first race weekend of the year kicked off with a trip to Snetterton in Norfolk – the team’s first race since September and first at that circuit.
Hamish qualified fifth and left Snetterton third in the championship with two fourths and two third-place finishes.
The next meeting is at the Brands Hatch GP circuit on May 11/12 (rounds 5-7).
Hamish said: “Brands was my dad’s local track, so it will be a really special race weekend for us. I’ve never been to Brands, not even as a spectator, so it’s not going to be an easy introduction to the circuit and we will have to be extremely focsed and push to get up to speed as quickly as we can. Even so, it’s probably the most excited I’ve been about a race weekend.”
