Roxburgh Reivers winners at the 2012 Scottish Orienteering Championships: Kirstin Maxwell, Eileen Maxwell and John Tullie

ROYAL Deeside was the fitting venue for the 2012 Scottish Orienteering Championships held over the four-day Jubilee Bank Holiday.

The Scottish Individual Championships took place not far from Balmoral Castle in mixed woodland and open hillside. Roxburgh Reivers again acquitted themselves well with three class winners – Kirstin Maxwell in W20 elite, Eileen Maxwell in W45 and John Tullie in M55.

Other results saw Fiona Forrest finish second Scot in W35, and fourth Scot places for Sarah Tullie in W20 elite, Barry Veitch in M40 and Lindsey Knox in W50.

The relay championships were held on the outskirts of Braemar but neither of the club teams managed a podium place, although everyone enjoyed their run which was much less rough underfoot than the previous day.

Our Edinburgh University student members fared better, with Kirstin Maxwell part of the winning team in the women’s open and Douglas Tullie taking silver in the men’s open.

Banchory was the venue for a sprint race on Monday but with many of the club back at work, Kirstin Maxwell was the only Reiver to make an impact, with a storming run to take 1st W20 on the women’s elite course.

The weekend incorporated selection races for the 2012 World Championships to be held in Switzerland in July.

The final race of the series was a middle distance competititon which saw Douglas Tullie having a comfortable win to seal his place in the team. Kirstin Maxwell rounded off a good weekend by finishing first W20 in the women’s selection race, while Sarah Tullie took third place in the standard W20 class.
