Short helps end long wait
TERI tennis ace Johnny Short helped the South of Scotland men’s over-35 team gain promotion from the bottom rung of the UK-wide league for the first time in a decade.
Short, who was partnered by Glasgow-based Stuart Clarke and joined in the South team by Gordon McGuigan (Ayr) and Colin Dunbar (Dumfries), helped the side to two victories at Eastbourne.
Wins over Northants and Cheshire resulted in the South gaining promotion from the bottom tier, group 6b, to group 5a. Short and Clarke lost their doubles encounter on the first day before rain put paid to the team’s meeting with Isle of Man on day two. Short, of Branxholme Road, then clocked two wins alongside Clarke on the final day to help his team pip opponents Cheshire to promotion. “It was a great trip, albeit slightly spoiled by the wet weather,” said Short. “Stuart and I are always competitive. We have played together nine times at Eastbourne and on six occasions we have gone to a championship tie-break shoot-out.
“It is the first South promotion I have been involved in and the team were delighted to sneak through in the end. I look forward to hopefully making the over-35 team for many years to come.”
