Shepherd happy to fight at top end of table
GEORGE Shepherd has declared himself delighted to watch his underachievers of last season reach for the stars.
After dropping down to Division ‘B’ the Tangerines endured a torrid campaign last year and almost plummeted further.
Not only have they since steadied the ship, they are now sitting second in the table and very much eyeing a return to the league’s top tier.
Shepherd said: “Last season was a very disappointing one for United. I thought we had a good squad, and we did, but we underachieved.
“So far this season it’s been completely different. There are a lot of young players in the squad, but they’ve come on a bundle and this has made a big difference.
“Everybody in the team has been knuckling down during the games and at training.
“Kevin Strathdee and Billy Clamp have been taking the training and the team’s fitness is at a high level.”
United pulled off a great result in their last outing as they toppled Stow 4-3.
Tomorrow (Saturday), United travel to face league leaders Ancrum in what promises to be a cracker.
“Ancrum have had a great start to the season and are a very good side,” said Shepherd. “United have had some great battles with them and I’m sure this will be the same.”
