Round the bowling greens: Buccleuch and Hawick

BUCCLEUCH: Last Tuesday’s senior match at Kelso could have swung either way after ten ends, but it was the visitors who gained the upper hand, winning all four triples for a 72 shots to 49 victory.Top squad for Buccleuch comprised G. Godfrey, M. Bell and T. Edmison (skip) 22-12.

Also last Tuesday, the ladies travelled to Jedburgh for their league game, but with the weather deteriorating and the green becoming slippy and dangerous, the match was abandond at the sixth end.

The men finished strongly at home to Newtown in last Wednesday’s league encounter, carding an 82 shots to 68 victory. Best for the hosts were J. Wallace, A. Martin, K. Graham and M. Bell (skip) 11 up.

Sunday’s Lady President’s Day saw Liz Sykes playing some superb bowls when romping to a 21-shot victory against Helen Chamerlain in the final.

THE usual hat night and tote draw will take place tonight.

HAWICK: Last Tuesday’s senior match away to a combined Selkirk/Ettrick team saw the Teries recording a 55-48 win. Top rink for the visitors comprised Jim Gray, Rob Lyall and Bobby McDonald (skip). Details: J. Brown 8 D. P. Johnstone 15; H. Bell 11 G. Lyall 16; D. Weir 25 A. Wilson 5; D. Carruthers 4 R. McDonald 19.

THE ‘A’ team’s clash at Abbotsford last Wednesday night turned out to be a ding-dong battle with the Galashiels club winning by a single shot (75-74). Hawick’s top rink was Bobby McDonald, M. Christy Snr, C. Gallagher and G. Smith (skip). Details: C. Hancock 23 L. Clarkson 11; J. Purves 9 G. Smith 19; J. Manczak 17 M. Christy Jnr 13; A. Hancock 14 N. Amos 11; B. Anderson 12 G. Lyall 20.

Also in action last Wednesday, the ‘B’ team notched a 65 shots to 56 home win over Kelso following a closely-fought game. Hawick’s top rink comprised Reece Johnstone, Keith Smith, Kenny Whyte and W Blaikie skipped rink. He was well supported by young. Details: R. Bell 14 T. Guthrie 12; W. Blaikie 16 J. Miller 12; A. Wilson 20 K. Gillespie 17; K. Oliver 14 I. Lauder 15. This was a good result for Hawick’s second string and sees them moving up the league.
