YOUNGSTERS sporting a green jersey at Sunday’s Berwick Bulldogs tournament all enjoyed a top-two finish.

Five Hawick Minis sides made up of primary school pupils entered the Northumberland tournament – and two emerged victorious, with three finishing as runner-up.

The P4 and P6 teams received medals for topping their leagues and the Greens coaches also dispensed silverware to individuals for fair play or an oustanding action during play.

The Darryn Chelley trophies were presented to John-Lee Elder (P7), Euan Welsh (P6) and Jack Oliver (P5). Coach John Tait explained: “John-Lee played like a terrier and played his heart out. Euan was not the most confident at the start of the tournament but gained his medal for competing well and received his winners’ medal with a smile on his face. And it was a momentus day for Jack, who scored his first try in a Greens jersey.”

Teams from P7, P5 and P3 all finished second in their mini leagues to contribute to an impressive overall performance by the Teri contingent. However, coach Tait insists that, at this stage of their fledgling rugby careers, the youngsters should be merely enjoying the game.

“We want all of the children who start playing at P3 to be still playing at P7,” he said. “It’s not about the winning, but about the participation and enjoyment. I would like to think Hawick Minis incorporates all the good things in rugby, such as the friendship. The mini rugby is a great grounding. At high school level, you have to instil that winning instinct, but many have that already.”

This weekend, the young players will embark on an end-of-season trip to Murrayfield to see the Scotland v New Zealand test. Two busloads carrying more than 100 Minis members will make the journey to Edinburgh.

Skills training for P6 and P7 players takes place on November 18 and 25 prior to the winter break. Players are also invited to a Christmas party at the leisure centre on December 16.
