HOTSHOT postman Lee McAllister is hoping to deliver a top performance this weekend and retain the Hawick Snooker Championship.

The quarter-finals, semi-finals and final of the keenly-contested annual tournament will be staged at the Conservative Club on Sunday.

However, if McAllister is to reclaim the silverware, he faces tough opposition including Brian Callaghan and Garry Kinnear, with preliminary qualification matches continuing throughout this week.

Now in their sixth year, the Hawick championships have become a focal point on the calendar.

Con Club player Davie Amos told the Hawick News: “There are a lot of good snooker players in the Borders and in Hawick and for years there has been a Borders championship.

“Dougie Rae, who plays for the Con Club, and myself, however, decided to get a Hawick championship going and it’s really gone from strength to strength.

“The preliminary rounds started six weeks ago and we’re now down to the last eight.”

The competition is sponsored by BannermanBurke Properties Ltd, Roxburghe Handknits and Belhaven Breweries.

The quarter-finals and semis will be the best of three frames, while the final is a best of five affair.

The action gets under way at 12.30pm.
