Magnificent seven to star for Borders

STARS of amateur football from the town and surrounding area will make up more than a third of the Borders select team that is set to face a Lothian and Edinburgh representative side.

Hawick Waverley trio Dean McColm, Taylor Hope and Andrew Maltman join Legion skipper Callum Hope in the regional squad, which also features Teri goalkeeper Chris Watson, Grant Robinson from Denholm, and James Collins.

The local seven have been picked by co-managers Steven Noble and Paul Graham following successful trials, and are part of the 20-man squad to represent the recently-resurrected Borders side at Netherdale a week on Sunday (2pm kick-off).

Former Legion man Maltman, 27, features at right wing for Waverley but has been earmarked for the right-back berth by coach Noble. He sees the selection of so many local players as a positive reflection on Hawick football.

“It’s brilliant for the area,” said Maltman, who is planning to move in the coming weeks to Australia for a year-long working holiday. “Dean and Taylor are great boys, and the three of us being in the squad tells you that the Waverley is going the right way, that we’re bringing through some good players.

“We don’t know much about the Edinburgh team, but I think we’ll cope well. There are a lot of good players in our team, so it should be a close game.”

Watson, the Leithen Rovers No.1, will contest the gloves with Gala Rovers custodian Steven King, and select coach Graham, also boss of Leithen, said of the Teri stopper: “We signed him from Hawick Legion and he was our player of the year last year, almost single-handedly winning us the South of Scotland Cup. The gloves are still up for grabs, but there’s a good chance that Chris will be in goals.”

Co-boss Noble expects Legion captain Callum Hope to prove influential in the challenge match. “Callum has a lot of experience and you never get less than 100 per cent from him. He’ll definitely play a big part.”

Denholm-based Ancrum midfielder Robinson and Collins, a 17-year-old former Livingston professional who now plays up front with Gala Rovers, complete the local contingent.
